Hi guys, as you know, I'm mad on Stephen Grant guns nay I love Grants and I was offered one that needed a bit of work. It has a few things wrong like a blacked forend and a little corrosion on the right sideplate However, it is otherwise indentical to my other Grant and I’ve embarked on a composed pair project. Best of all it's a number 2 and mine is a number 1! The guns are only 200 apart serial number wise so it’s a nice close fit. I'm likely to have added a gold "1" to my Grants top lever and forend metalwork to sync them up. My original has longer barrels and of course has been re-stocked. I’m going to tidy this one up and decide on the best way to sync up the finish. Also, and very cool, Matt my mate at the gunshop (they now own AGL too) pulled out a double case that just needs a nice clean up. I’m afraid I got a bit gooey when I placed the guns in the case (don't quite fit yet). I’m yet to find out the price for the case but if the vendor (it’s not Matts directly) want’s too much I have a carcass in brilliant condition waiting to be restored. After the disappointment of the Clarke it made me smile again. Here they are;

It'd be one hell of a Christmas morning to come downstairs and tear off the wrapping paper to find that inside.

Very nice project.

You've got some parallax or something going on in your photos. Barrels appear to be bent.

Oh yeah, that's why the guns were cheap. smile

Actually I think it's because I forgot to take my macro lens off...nicely noticed smile

Tony,

Glad you found another "project". I'm looking forward to watching your progress.

You do not often see cast off built in to the barrels. Or is it cast on?
Posted By: GJZ Re: Grant - Composed Pair Project - 07/30/11 08:28 PM
That is a good example of barrel distortion.

Apparently the seller of the guns told me they have built in lead.

"Built in lead". I like that. Where can I get one??? I need that. Looking forward to more pics as you get these back together. Thanks, Frank

Good for you for bringing a Grant back to glory. looks like it just needs some TLC.

Thanks. Other than slightly shorter barrels it'll look great when it's all done...I hope wink

Can't wait to see them....Think the action was by Scott ?

From the looks of the original wood fit it easy to see why Grants weren't in the same league as Purdeys.

Good work Homey Joe. Always there to find something WRONG with someone's pride. No wonder you live under a viaduct.
Posted By: Ballistix999 Re: Grant - Composed Pair Project - 08/01/11 04:00 PM
Joes right, the forend is parted from the wood and the top tang isn't tight eithe. I intend to make best what I can and that's part of the challenge of course. smile

Given that Scott made most London guns during a time period it wouldn't surprise me. The engraving is very Grant though.

Cheers

Now just hold on here for a minute. First, Stephen Grant made his own guns and second, the wood on that gun has not been taking care of as it should have been and probably stored in an abusive condition. A Stephen Grant would not have left the premises with wood to metal fit like that.

And thus my challenge begins smile!

And Pod. Thanks. smile
