I am looking for suggestions for a 28 gauge hammer gun that would operate as a shooter... 2 3/4", I prefer 28" bbl's and would like more modern dimensions.

I have looked at the SIACE but the weak dollar has pushed the price up dramatically.

Other thoughts? Any input is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I like the Birmingham 28s but many are 2 1/2". I have one with 30" brls and is nitro proofed at 2 3/4. They are well balanced guns that handle well. You can sometimes find a Belgium 28 that is a good shooter for a whole lot less. I have one at the smiths now for some adjustments. Someone had messed with it.

Jim Legg had a 28g Bernadelli, I beleive. It looked like a nice modern gun. He tried to sell it a couple yrs ago. Not sure it sold. PM him.

Look for a used Bernadelli "Italia" or a higher grade one. You might contact their current US rep and see if they will still make on order for you.

Those aren't really "made to order" or "bespoke" guns in the old sense, but they used to let you specify barrel length and chokes and PG, 1/2PG or straight grip, which cost nothing extra, just a little wait. They may still do that, a nice service.

Send Toby Barclay an email at Heritage Guns in the UK. He just got a pre-1898 Osborne 28 hammer with slotted barrels. The barrels are scrap.
He is going to have it sleeved/reproofed for 2 3/4" and freshened up, hopefully before the Vintage Cup. I don't think he has decided how long to make the new barrels (28" or 30"). I doubt it will be ready before the Southern SxS in Sanford.
Perhaps he could make it up to your specs.
Toby posts here occasionally, perhaps he will chime in.

Good Luck,

Jim Legg did sell the little 28 ga. I got it and it shoots great. I still owe Jim a big thanks for selling it to me. And a nice case to boot. Frank
