Hello, new to the forum. I might have the opportunity to acquire an R. Mahrholdt - Peterlong over under shotgun. It is in 20 Ga with an extra set of 28 ga barrels. I tried to find some info onthe web, but came up mostly empty. I did find a lot of info on rifle and combination guns, but no over/unders. So, I came to the experts. Any information on what to look for and approximate value would be much appreciated. I will try to get some pictures.

Thanks,

krf
Welcome !!

I have no knowledge of this maker or guns, but know that others will be here to help.

Hopefully, you will be a part of this superior family of gun nuts.:}

Best regards,
John
Here is some info about the maker. Perhaps Jani knows more....

The few guns that I have seen are all combinations of one sort or another.

If you would like to see some pics of a rifle by this maker, PM me with your e-mail address, and I will send through Picassa Photo program to you.

Kindest Regards,
Rob
It's hard to be specific without proof marks and photos. In earlier period Mahrholdt sourced over-unders from Suhl, later also from Ferlach. In both cases this should be a quality piece.
With kind regards,
Jani

P.S.: # 41.5XX, by any chance?
If indeed number 41.5XX it was made in Ferlach by Johann Michelitsch, appearantly in the 1950s. A quality gun worth several thousand dollars. You may get a better idea of value by comparison to similar guns offered by online sources, such as Bob Jones'.
With kind regards,
Jani
Yes, S/N is 41,5xx. Here are some pics from the auction catalog...

Thanks,

I suspect its a 3-4K gun but who knows at that auction.I looked it over and not much else there to bring in buyers in that range,a couple Parkers and Drilling but there are enough guns to attract lots of buyers in general.

Let us know what it goes for and if you get it.
Being a small bore, 2 barrel set, single trigger, pipe style frame reinforcement & triggerplate(?) action, it just may realize a price >$4k U.S. of A. What type tube steel do it have?

Richard Mahrholdt was more of a firearms merchant that anything else. I'm lead to believe that his son served a stint in Suhl on his walk-about and partnered with Schemmer & Wittner to form Wittner, Schemmer & Mahroldt or Suhler Waffengesellschaft in Suhl post WWI. It advertised as the only game in town for Manufacture Liegeoise d'Armse a Feu and by 1930 dropped from the address books. So I assume Mahrholdt returned to Richard Mahrholdt in the 1930s. Then again the two Mahrholdts may not have been related, which would be very, very odd.

I was not able to find anything out about the barrel steel. I am hoping to be able to see the shotgun in person next week.
KRF,

Would you mind passing along your references for marholdt - Peterlongo rifle references on the web. I have a rifle mauser action from 1941 time frame, and would like to learn more. Thank you.

Kindest Regards,
Rob
Rob,

I don't have any specific sources, but Google is your friend. Searching for combinations of Mahrholdt, Peterlongo and Ferlach, there is quite a bit of reference material. Information on O/U shotguns, however, is few are far between.

I have one week until the auction. Is thee any concensus on value?

Thanks,

krf

Thanks for your reply. Raimey has given me a lot of info on my example, just like to research anything new that may be out there.
Good luck with the auction, let us know how you do.

Kindest Regards,
Rob
