Assateague Island National Wildlife refuge, Virginia, near Chincoteague, sunrise over the Atlantic 01 January 2023, 0725 hrs. Sun was supposed to arrive at 0716, at 119 degrees ESE; This shore runs NNE-SSW allowing one to look straight out over the ocean at the rising sun. This year the mist was so heavy over the Atlantic that the disc wasn't seen until fully 20 minutes after it breached the horizon. What a wonderful water/marsh/island area for wildlife and birds.

Same view but from 01 Jan 2020...Covid arrived a month later. Sometimes one wonders if New Year's Day is prophetic...the harsh almost military blood calm arrival seemed prescient.

Consulting my maps...in theory looking 90 degrees due east, the latitude should take you to Tangier, Morocco. But take a 29 degree south angle for winter and it should mean the sun traveled from N. Mauritania (or S. Morocco/"Western Sahara") this day.
