Occasionally I see shotguns made apparently made for civilians by Sauer and proofed as late as 1943 and 1944. Were many made for sporting use during this time? Fascinating, as by mid 1943 the Allies decided to eliminate their ability to produce arms....or anything else.

Joe, I recently sold a grade xvii Sauer that was proofed in'43. It was fully up to pre-war standards. It may well have been assembled earlier, but unsold due to war-time disruption.

Joe, my Dad a RCAF bomber pilot shot down in July 1942, had a ringside seat of USAAF's heaviest daylight bombing toward the end, in a POW camp 20 miles south of Berlin. He described Fortresses appearing as glittering schools of minnows. I googled Allied effectiveness and, for all the tonnage dropped, it "reduced" German production to 1942 levels. Sauer quality 1942 was probably as good as pre-war. My Sauer was built in 1914.

Yes, I would imagine the gun was built from pre or early war production. Quality appears flawless, as I expect all prewar Sauers to be. Only a couple months after the proof mark the British and then Americans got serious about it. Amazingly, after all the incredible tonnage dropped on German industry, I believe peak Axis wartime production occurred in October of 1944!

However, the gun in question has a serial number of 311,xxx and I believe Sauer gave the tube sets numbers at the beginning of production. Be interesting to know when that was.

Some off thread communication between Joe & I:

Joe the following serial numbers also experienced proof in the 1940s:

330,718 - 6 / 1940
331,482 - 6 / 1942
331,483 - 6/ 1942
331,583 - 6 / 1940
331,786 - 10 / 1941
332,530 - 8 / 1941
332,720 - 9 / 1940
332,748 - ? / 1940

I pulled these from Cate's Sauer text.

Cheers,

Raimey
