Just acquired a 22lr Sauer Tell. I have no idea of what the Tell means? I plan to use it for squirrels this fall as it is very accurate and scoped with an old weaver in claw mounts.

You know I don't think I recall either. But the phrase is Tellbüchse or Tell Rifle. Heym & a few other makers had a similar modell.

Could the name be connected with that of the great Swiss marksman Wilhelm Tell?

Yeah, I had the same idea but just didn't voice it.

I seem to remember that the word 'Tell' has something to do with hunting, possible 'shooting' in general.
I think that a couple hundred years ago a hunter would be referred to as 'a Tell'
There are some shooting clubs in Germany with 'Tell' in their name.

Could be that it comes from 'Wilhelm Tell' who arguably was a crack shot.
Wolfgang should be able to find out.

Regards
Gunter

Gunter, you are right. It comes from Wilhelm Tell, the man who shot an apple from his son's head.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tell

Sauer gave the name "Tell" to a series of Kipplaufbüchsen, to make clear, that ttey are very precise, I think.:

Tell Büchse became a synonym for this kind of Kipplaufbüchse, some nice examples are here:
