Was recently perusing the "Gun Library" at Cabella's and saw they had a Sedgeley 1903 sporter marked .22 WCF. Didn't get the serial. Decent outside condition, not perfect for sure but certainly restorable if you do that. Had no interest in buying, so didn't look at the bore.

I remember posts here on these guns and thought somebody might be interested enough to investigate this one further.

I know little about these and wondered if they were commonly fired with .22 Hornet ctgs., and if they had the usual smaller diameter bores of .22 WCFs and early Hornets? And are the Sedgeley conversions single shots? Are they normally on low number receivers?

(Always ASS-U-ME'D that the answers to these questions were all "Yes" but am willing to learn better!).

The one I have is marked "cal 22 wcf", under that is marked "hornet" with the standard sedgley proof above it all. It is a repeater, the magazine is attached to the floor plate with a small rivet. The bolt has a spring loaded finger machined into it that assists loading the cartridge. It is built on a low # springfield action and still has the springfield marking and serial on the receiver ring. The stock is the standard sedgley type with the snabel forend tip and no cheek piece.

I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

The one I saw seems just like you describe except without the Hornet marking, and I can't verify that it was low number.

I must say I like the style of the Sedgley stock!

Thanks for the info!

Somewhere I read or heard that the .22 WCF has a .228" groove diameter, as opposed to a .224" for the Hornet and .222" for a rim-fire.
Correct me if this is wrong.

Correct. But that didn't stop Sedgley from running their .22WCF chamber reamer into anything with a nominal .22 bore. Mine was a Low Wall Winder Musket, .22 short. Needless to say as a .22WCF, that barrel is woefully inaccurate.

LOTS of early production and semi-custom .22 CFs have undersized bores. I had an early Savage 219 (Utica-made in late 1930s) that originally had a .222 bore. I inherited it from my uncle after he'd had it rechambered to .22-.30-30AI....you can imagine the accuracy with THAT! (I had it relined into a .25-20WCF, which really shoots).

The early Sedgley and Griffin and Howe Hornets used 22 rimfire barrels from the Springfield Armory with .223 bore diameter. Early Winchester Hornets like their high wall barrells and Model 54s also have .223 bores. My experience is that those early Hornets often shoot as well with .224 bullets as with the smaller ones. I've had several Sedgleys marked 22 WCF. All had standard Hornet chambers and shot very well.

It's not the tight bore in my Sedgley .22WCF, it's the woefully slow twist of the original .22 short that's the culprit. 1-22" or so isn't fast enough to stabilize even the shortest lightest cast bullets I've been able to generate.
