The story I bought was that Sedgley would make rifles for retailers with their name on them, I had never heard that before and after receiving the rifle I believe the story is correct. Typical Sedgley features are the stock with the checkered triangle behind the tang, Sedgley bluing, non-military barrel, barrel band, Sedgley safety firing pin and the little raised tits on the bottom of the bolt shroud.
Non-typical features are the bolt jeweling and bolt knob checkering, military front sight, P barrel proof instead of S proof, A Hatcher type hole in receiver and of course the name on the barrel (Collins Gun & Sporting Goods Shop, Thomas, W.VA.) It appears the shop was also a watch repair shop.
In the tang location where Sedgley would put their serial number on rifles with the receiver markings stippled out, there is a 1. They also stamped what appears to be the original serial on the bottom flat of the receiver. When Sedgley did checker the bolt knob on the Deluxe rifles, it was on a circular pattern and not a tear drop pattern like this one.
I'm glad I got this example, even though I have always been told to not buy the story.

...the little raised tits on the bottom of the bolt shroud.
Not seeing what you are referring to. Could you post closer pictures. Love the little details. BTW, beautiful rifle, hope it gets hunted or at least shot and played with.

I'll take a picture tomorrow, guess most people don't know about this Sedgley detail. Fred is out of town until sometime next week so I may not be able to get the photo posted as it's sure beyond my computer skills to post photos.

The left one in the top photo and the top one in the bottom photo show the "tits" I was referring to, the other bolt is standard Springfield. When I started really collecting the Sedgleys, Gary Bush told me about these details. In fact he recently sent me some other photos of Sedgley bolt details that I will send to Fred for posting. I show these details in my Sedgley display but I'm not sure I can find my photos in the computer.

Thanks for posting the photos. As for details what is the purpose- to maintain alignment of the bolt shroud from rocking to and fro. The tit on the bolt lock side appears to be a pin, handle side a guide. Apologies for the punctuation and some spelling, missing a few key functions.

Curious as to how the raised portions were made; was it by addition of metal or just done by milling. What do you think its purpose was? I have 3 Sedgley rifles, a hornet , a standard 30/06 and a deluxe 30/06, all have the ridges on the bolt shrouds.

I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

They would be hand fitted to insure there is no excess play in the bolt, thereby improving the likelihood they could insure a good triggerpull.

No, the pin is for the bolt lock and is on all shrouds. Both sides have the same addition of metal for the "tits". Since there is more metal on these than the standard shrouds, it appears that Sedgley may have made their own shrouds. When they got to the speed ignition there is more metal internally than the std and couldn't really have been a welded addition, so that adds to the theory that they made their own shrouds. Mike has what I believe is the reason for the "tits".
