Just an update on continuing efforts to regulate barrels of a Cosmos acquired at auction three years ago. Keith Kearcher sent a nice target at 60 yards with the barrels overlapping (vertical stringing of 3 inches due to his eyesight). I'm awaiting return of the gun to try it at 100 and am hopeful to see decent composite group at that range. He also shimmed the backsight, raising it 40 thou so that it may shoot to point of aim, too. Will post results in a week or two. Regards, Tim

Tim: Look forward to hearing your results. There was a Coggie Cosmos floating around here last year lookin for a new owner. It had been recoloured and refinished fairly tastefully (unlike some!) but the previous owner wanted ten grand for the presentation, 'cause it wouldn't shoot!
Needless to say, back it went!

Tim, is the C&H barrel rifled the same way as the H&H original? What has made your paradox need re-regulation? Bob

Bob, No, the Coggie, made in 1909 has land and grooves rifling, rather than the original H&H 1885 patent ratchet rifling, something that everyone did (except Lancaster with their oval bores) after Holland's patent expired, I understand. Barrels had a bulge at auction and I bought, believing the bulge could be fixed. It was and the barrels reproofed. Tried to work up a load, but could not get proper regulation beyond 50 yards (even the felt wads go as far as 50 yards!). Sent to Keith who did three moves and thought he had it, but only tests at 55 yards. Well, the 100 yard composite group was 10+ inches, not usable. So back to Keith who looks to have done the necessary with four moves of the barrels. I'll do the follow up at the range at 100 yards and we'll see if the brilliant results at 60 yards translate to minute of kudu at 100... Regards, Tim

Update here. Latest effort at regulation failed. So I'm off to Oregon on 23 June and Keith K. and I will collaborate to see if we can't get the gun to regulate at 100 yards! Will update further towards the end of the month. Regards, Tim

Back from Bend, Oregon and a session with Keith that burned up all the 30 rounds of 749 gr. Fosbery heads with no definitive result other than that the left barrel was shooting low. (Did look as if the barrels were close together, tho.)
Keith made an 8 thou move up on the left barrel and I trekked back to DC. Made more ammo up this morning and went out to Clarke Bros. range near Warrenton. Got a five inch composite group a tad high over the bull at 100 yards. Minute of kudu! Off to Namibia 12 July and the Coggie has earned a berth... Regards, Tim

Congrats on the results. Do you plan on using it as your primary or a backup gun? When things are going well, it is tough to pick up the #2.

Tom, Am also taking a Rigby engraved Webley 1902 patent falling block that I had rebarrelled in hand-detachable .375 and .300 flanged magnum barrels back in 1986. Hope to do a hartebeeste with the Coggie and a duiker with the .375 and something that requires a scope (no iron sights on the .300 barrel) like a klipspringer or damara dik dik. Regards, Tim
