What is the correct buttplate for an early NID? Have a 20ga that I picked up several years ago without a buttstock, recently obtained a usable one without a b/p. NC Ordanance does not show one for an NID. Thinking that it was just a grooved one??

I just looked at my fairly early 16 ga. NID star model field grade with cocking indicators. The serial no. is 456xxx. It has the relatively plain buttplate with the horizontal grooves between the screws. I have also seen some with the so-called "ring groove" buttplate. Hopefully Walter Snyder can tell you which is correct, but you might need to give a serial no. range to be sure.

All four of my NIDs have the plain buttplates with horizontal grooves like Keith described. The earliest is serial #429xxx made in 1926 and the latest is #450xxx made in 1927. They are all field grade guns with cocking indicators.
