Hi all, just a curious about this gauge. How does it compare to the 28 or even 20 gauges?

Any info at all would be great.

Thanks so much!!!

I have a Sxs in 24 ga. and lucked out and have more than a lifetime of shells for it. The shot charge is 11/16ths of an oz. or the same as a 3" .410 bore. I have shells in 5s, 6s, and 8s. Used to use it on woodcock, but now use none tox shot so I use either a 28 or 20. Still use it for doves, squirrels early and great bunny gun. Some years back maybe 20 someone imported Beretta O/Us in to this country. Fiochi still loads the 24ga and are available from a number of places. Got to find some brass cases and load some non tox loads.

Best,

Edit: When I clicked my link to make sure it worked I noticed Ballistic Products was out of them.

Just one of those bores that really fell out of favour. The Magtech brass needs a wad that is over size to fit the thin brass case. I have 50 but have also now got a good supply of Fiocchi stuff in 6 and 7 shot. I have two 24 bores; a Belgian Byard and an English G.E.Lewis, both hammer guns. Lagopus.....

I imported the Beretta 24 ga guns. I found 74 guns in Italy on one of my trips. Most were double triggers. I also had Ferlib make me several 24 gauges guns. Also, I have the first 24 ga. that Arrietam built. Back in 1993. They made it for me. I use this gun for quail hunting ever year

I have an Ideal Brevet 24 ga,but I had it chamberlined to 28 ga.
It works well and is a delight. The Shorter shot string is very effective.

John Boyd, do you ever get any of the Berettas back in trade? Do you have one now?

Back in the first forty years of the twentieth century, when American loading companies were regularly providing 24-gauge shells, the only length I find offered was 2 1/2 inches. In those days the standard load in the 2 1/2 inch 24-gauge shell was 2 drams equiv. and 3/4 ounce of shot, while the standard load in the 2 1/2 inch 28-gauge was 1 3/4 drams equiv. and 5/8 ounce of shot.

I ran across some 24ga paper shells at a gun show recently. I thought about getting them, to give me an excuse to acquire a 24ga gun. I would love to have a 24ga hammer gun as a dedicated quail gun, but I haven't run across one yet that I can afford.

Researcher, far as I know, 24's have never been chambered for anything other than 2 1/2". Or in any case, all the shells currently available are 2 1/2". Nice oddity sort of thing, I guess, but you end up with a gun that has a slightly larger bore than a 28, but shoots a slightly lighter standard load (11/16 oz vs 3/4). And you can always reload for the 28, fairly easily. I seem to recall that the late Don Zutz had a 24ga reloading setup from Mec.

John, I had a Beretta 24ga. Are you talking sxs or OU on the ones you imported? I don't remember your name on the one I had, which was an OU with DT and sling swivels. I actually liked the gun, picked it up cheaply enough (at Cabela's), and figured I'd use it on occasion for grouse and woodcock. But the problem was, it had pretty tight chokes and chrome bores. Couldn't figure out how to get them opened, so it moved on down the line.
