Based on price and availability my first double will probably be a Lefever Nitro or an Ithaca NID field for doubles trap.

Can anyone compare the two based on experience?

Has anyone enjoyed either in doubles?

Thank you

Lou

I have both. Ammo is the biggest difference. Others will join in. I would go with the N.I.D. but you will pay more for the gun.

What is the difference in Ammo?

I thought that both could handle modern standard velocity 12 guage target shells?

Unless you happen to luck into an 'A-Grade' Nitro, the field grade NID will be a better quality gun, and you'll probably pay a lttle more for it. As far as the ammo question goes, both were engineered for modern shells...I don't know what double-trouble was referring to there...Geo

No offense, but I would think that if you were going to shoot doubles trap, you could find a lot better SXS than these two. I don't know if either would make very good trap guns. And be careful of the drop at the comb. But- good luck with what you find.

Jimmy:
The Lefever Nitro and the NID field can be had in the neighborhood of $500.
I would love a Winchester 21, but those go for about $6,000.
NID's with beavertail seem to be about $2,000.
What SXS would you get in my price range just to have some safe fun at doubles with modern off the shelf shells?

At that price range you might get a Fox Sterlingworth (Utica) with a straighter PG stock with 30" barrels. Slap a recoil pad on it and you might be there. I wouldn't shoot moose loads, but light trap loads should be fine. You can often find 12 gauge SW at that price range with 30" tubes which are probably the most common.
