I think it's pretty cool that a beagle won the Westminster. First time ever. Cute little bugger too. I guees there is hope for an Airedale some day too.

I think it definitely made my 15 year old beagle smile.

You an Airedale Man DoubbleT? Me too! Never seen one yet that didn't have an IQ of at least 180! We use Airedales for catch dogs on hogs, and did on bear back when dogs were legal on bear.

I dunno - seems that breeds winning 'Best In Show' are often puppy-milled into oblivion. Breeding for appearance in the show ring has severely damaged hunting breeds like the American cocker and Irish setter, split the English springer into virtually two breeds, and turned a superb water dog, the standard Poodle, into a clown. So I can't be too enthused about a fine little rabbiter being tagged with that label.

Jack:
Those are valid points for the breeds you mention, but I'm not overly concerned about it happening to the beagle. Beagles have almost always been in the top 10 of popular breeds, yet have maintained hunting ability.
I fear a ban on the use of chase dogs in hunting more than anything.

Oh yeah sure am. Got doubles! A pair of brothers. Woppers, they weigh in at 105 and 95lbs. Way too smart, they play us like a cheap fiddle here.

I used to know a government "predator control officer" who used Airdales to keep cats, bears (and sometimes pigs) off his "valuable" hounds. I always thought those wooly rascal terriers were pretty darned valuable, too--not to mention VALIANT!
Anybody else ever hunted upland game with a beagle? (I like a dog that grins 24/7!).

wooly rascals for sure. The big guy has blown out the ACL's in BOTH his back knees and has had TPLO surgery on both. Yet he still chases everything that enters his turf. The other one just let's him do all the work. Both are 12 years old and still kickin' butt! They are fearless. For Florida boys they have adapted well to the frozen tundra of W. PA. They love the snow.

The practical joker of dog breeds. They seem to know exactly how to push your buttons. Mine will swipe the TV remote right out from under your nose and prance around the house as if saying "Look what I've got!" But they are absolutely fearless and loyal. But once you get a 'dale, you'll never go back.
