I keep seeing reference to Prewar firearms. What is concidered prewar? Guns made before 1941? Or before 1945? Or ?

I would say prior to 1939 (the outbreak of the European War, after we entered the war in 41, it then became a world war).

Just my opinion

Best,

Greg

Generally speaking, I take it (and use it) as a reference to WWII. Where doubles are concerned, a whole lot changed post-war. Not talking design, but rather what happened to the sxs industry, especially in this country. And the rise in popularity of the OU.

While I think Larry is right, from a quality standpoint I consider the pre WWI guns as higher quality overall and use that as my first cutoff date. Quality went down between the wars and then took another drastic drop after the end of WWII. It is kind of like the pre '64 date in Winchester but not as well defined.

To be pedantic & quite picky, there are actually two Pre-War considerations. The sporting weapons made Pre- WWI(Great War) were pretty much made mostly by hand & then mechanization due to the ramping up for war production & for replacing the mechanics lost in the Great War. Mechanization continued to ramp up thru WWII and centres with very talented mechanics like Weipert, etc. were forced to totally convert to mechanization and their offerings resemble this.

On another vein, I stumbled upon info on the Chinese Civil War and it is ranked 3rd behind the 2 Great Wars, being unbeknownst to me less I forgot my World History.

I forgot to note that it is the mechanization that differentiates the hand quality(eye of quality control, fit, etc.) of the Pre-WWI or Pre-WWII from the post period where so many talented mechanics were lost and mechanization replaced them.

For example WWI saw the demise of Ernst Lindner in fierce fighting w/ the Brits & the associated/subsequent fall into obscurity of the famed Daly Gun.

While premium quality guns may show superior workmanship prior to the wars, some of the saddest excuses for firearms were also made in the same period.

But that just shows the talent of the mechanics, who could fill a price-point order for an outfitter or turn out a bespoken piece for a well heeled client.
