Starting Saturday morning, I'll be winding my way across the Adirondacks of upstate New York, into Vermont's Green Mountains and then across New Hampshire on my way to catch the ferry in Portsmouth Maine to go to Nova Scotia.
Besides Orvis and Covey Rise in Manchester Vermont, any gun shops I should make a point of stopping into?

In eastern NY, if you get near the Taconic Parkway, north of I84 take the route 44 exit going east to Salt Point, NY. It is a small town maybe 3 miles from the Taconic. You will find Safari Outfitters, ltd. It is run by Niles Wheeler and his wife Lots of fine gun and other goodies

Just North of Portsmouth NH is the town of Kittery, ME. You need to stop at the Kittery Trading Post. (also a strip of outlets there) The gun department on the second floor has literally hundreds (thousands?) of used and new guns. There's usually a deal to be had there and ALWAYS lots of nice guns to see and fondle.
PS, You'll love Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island and if you can fit it in, PEI is a must see!

And if you end up doing as Linn suggests, don't forget British Sporting Arms in Millbrook. Just another couple of miles. Charles Schneible is a good guy.

James: I did a similar tour of that region last year. All the high points have been well covered here already and all were good fun, but the one I enjoyed the most was probably Safari Outfitters. Quirky, exotic and interesting.

I've been to all the above and always stop on my way by, but remember, it's the hole in the wall places that will surprise you --- and while we all rag on Cabela's I still find some gems there - 2 last week as it were!

Thanks all. Safari and BSA are much too far south from my planned route to make a detour. After Manchester in the Green Mountains, I'm veering north to Mount Washington in NH before I hit Portsmouth in Maine to catch the ferry.
Thanks all who had suggestions and I know I'll be hitting KTP for sure. And any other hole in the wall gun shops I see.

I've got to correct you.... Portsmouth is in New Hampshire and Portland is in Maine. I don't know if a Nova Scotia ferry departs from Portsmouth but I know for a fact it departs from Portland. Going to Portland you'll be driving right by Cabella's.

I feel a conflict coming on. Regardless, there is a double gun, half smoke, deer gutting, and soft ice cream shop just to the left of the Parkway, just a short distance from Safari Outfitters. It is a very entertaining place of business, not to be missed. Their sign mentions buying and selling of Parker and Fox shotguns.
