Anyone have experience with this gun? Seems to be quite a few on the market. Priced reasonably but seem a bit heavy for the gauge.

I had a couple of these in the past, seemed to be ok. But they did not go over well with my clients as yes, heavy for a 28 ga if someone is wanting to save weight. I beleive these were on a 20 ga frame

I owned two including one that was part of a two barrel set (20/28 gauge). They are indeed are on a 20 gauge frame. BTW, my two barrel set was a SKB model 880. Identical in every way to the Weatherby and in fact built in the same factory in Japan. Weatherby wouldn't allow them to put their name on a two barrel set, so the ribs were marked SKB model 880. Ps. Probably more then you wanted to know.

I had one. It was fat in the wrist and weighed too much for a 28GA. I would rather have a six pound 16 or 20 gauge than the same weight in a 28.

There were also some Athenas made in Japan by Nikko. And there was an older (60's) pre-Fausti Italian-made Weatherby, but I think they were all the Regency model, before they started using the Athena name.

The earliest Athenas were made by Angelo (not Antonio) Zoli. Nicely finished but I never heard anything about their shootability or reliability. Weatherby has switched shotgun vendors a lot, but the SKB-made ones WORK fine at least.
