My family has the following gun. I am not sure what it is, but I will try to describe it and add some pictures. Am hoping someone will recognize it and be able to provide me with some information as to its value. Thank you, in advance, for your help. Heym and Son, Suhl, Muzzle-loading, double barrel hammer gun. The Damascus barrels are approximately 31.5 inches in length - I'm not fully sure where to begin the measurement from. The hammers have two cocked positions (half-cock, full cock?). The Monte Carlo stock has a 14 inch LOP and is nicely carved. Most of the metal surfaces are engraved and many of them have a goldish cast. The top rib is engraved "Heym n Sohn ~ Suhl" and appears to be gold filled, though not all the letters remain filled. The ramrod slides out and has a sort of "Pig's Tail" metal end. The bore diameters are about 5/8ths of an inch (I'm sorry I cannot measure these more exactly). It appears to have a replacement screw involved with the left hammer. Seems like a pretty light, small-framed gun, especially for a muzzle-loader. I will try to load pictures, below. If anyone can tell me anything about the gun, I would be most appreciative. Again, I would also appreciate a rough estimate as to its value. Kind regards, T.R. T.R. Kline:
31.5 inches would give about 80 cm tube length. From the 1st pic, it looks like just behind the platinum or silver band is where the breech plug meets the tubes. There were several Heyms at the beginning of the 20th century and since your gun is from the percussion era, I would guess that it was made by Stephan Heym & Son of Suhl in Thuringen who began around the middle of the 19th Century or Friedrich Wilhelm Heym who founded a company in Suhl in the mid-1860s but some sources give the Heym gunmaking beginning just before the 19th Century. Let me look a little for additional info. The stock has an Austrian or Germanic style cheek-piece. And the "pigs-tail" you mention looks to be a wad puller.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

Travis K.:
Is the left tube cracked in the silver band? Also, are there any maker's marks or the like on the underside of the tubes?
Kind Regards,

Jani - Thanks - that gun is much like it - a little more ornately carved though. Do you have any idea how I determine if this one is a Cape Gun? I.e., whether one of the barrels is rifled? Yes, on closer inspection - the rib does appear to say "I.N Heym". Thank you!

You are very welcome, Travis K. The rifled barrel in a Cape Gun (Büchsflinte) is usualy smaller in outside diameter and has thicker wall. But the rifle sights on such a combination rifle/shotgun are usualy the first sign that we are not dealing with a simple double barrel shotgun. - Jani

Raimey:
Hi - Nope, not cracked, a squigly engraving line that goes around each barrel and across the rib. I do not see any other Maker Marks anywhere on the gun. i appreciate the help, really.

Jani: Right, I should have guessed. No, there are no rifle sights, just a gold bead at the muzzle. So, probably a shotgun, fowling piece? This is such a strange little gun.
