I have a Francotte .12 ga side by side serial number
>6198 with no date. It is marked on top on the rib with the following: 8420 A. Francotte Paris France B. Kitteredge & Co. Cin. Club Gun. There are also some manufacturer marks with AF and a crown in several places. Can anyone tell me when this gun may have been made or imported to the US, or any other data about this gun? I learned from the former owner today that the shotgun was made before 1940 because his father owned at least that long. I appreciate any info that the forum can provide on this gun.

If 6198 is the complete SN, I get a date of 1934. If that's correct, there should also be a cursive letter "m" on the barrel flats along with the other proofmarks. Listed as a "bottom grade" gun--which would still be a decent gun (as all Francottes are) but fairly plain.

If possible, please post some close up pics of the gun, watertable, barrel flats, etc.

Is 'Francotte Chokebore', or are any other words, stamped on the barrel flats or underside of barrels?

Always looking for small bore Francotte SxS shotguns.

Rick,
As Larry has implied most vintage Francottes are seen with 5 digit serial numbers. However, Abercrombie & Fitch, which was the primary importer of Francottes, did import guns with 4 digit numbers during the mid-thirties. Unfortunately, the number you listed doess not appear in their sales records. Most of the 4 digit numbers were on a model described as a 1923-H, however, those were all 410's. There were a few imported for the John Wanamaker store in Philadelphia that also had 4 digit numbers. Perhaps others were imported for the Kettridge store in Cincinnati. The best thing that you could do is to post photographs of the proof marks on the barrel flats and the action table. BTW, the Kettridge store was in operation as far back as the Civil War but I don't know when they went out of existence. Knowing that might help you the determine the age of your Francotte. You might check out the Cincinnati Gun Club angle as well.
