On the Adolph thread we decided that it might be a good learning tool for all of us to post some photos of engraving that we can document who the engraver is. The more we see known works, the easier it will be to identify unknown engraving . I hope that others might participate and give the documentation for the engraver.

This gun is a Baker from Baker Gun and Forging Co. It is Signed by Frank Mason the Baker engraver for about 10 years until 1910 or so. Mason went on to establish and engraving business doing symbols, company motiffs, and other identifications that needed a talented hand. This gun is one of two I know of signed by Mason and another gun is known as his personal gun, but not signed as I recall.

Here is where he signs it with his initials, F E M--------

Very few engravers during the period I'm interested in signed their work. I would estimate that R.J. Kornbrath signed less than 1/10th of one percent. I'm not aware how the in-house engravers for the shotgun companies worked but don't remember seeing many signed pieces. There is lot of published pictures of Kornbrath engraving as well as all the "Pulls" he took which are in the McCracken Library. Sadly when I was there I only copied the rifle stuff and got very few shotguns. As I can make some time I'll dig out what Kornbrath shotgun pictures I have and post them. Back to family and Christmas stuff.

Until then here is one.

Daryl,
I really like that Mason engraving. The use of different motifs, floral with two distinctly different types of scroll which all fit together with the other styles and ideas in such complementary balance is very nice. I would think that is pretty darn hard to pull off as a general idea, let alone in the details.

It is unclear to me if that is a continuation of the floral pattern on the fences?

Merry Christmas. Jake

Jake, here is a photo [not the best] of the top of the Baker. Hope that answers your question. If not, ask again. Daryl
