Funny that Dan Lefever and Baker were so much earlier than the others making SBT guns.

When Ansley began working for the big W he was representing their ammo, but shooting a Parker, thru the GAH of 1900. By August of that year the big W had him shucking a Model 1897, and in 1901 he went 25 straight in the GAH, then missed the first bird in the shoot-off.

The Fox single barrel trap gun was somewhat covered by Clarence A Godshalk's Patent No. 1,137,477 granted April 27, 1915. However with the interruptions of The Great War AHFGCo. didn't get the single on the market until 1919.

I don't understand John's question about "why Ansley didn't build many of these guns while he was in the business". They weren't designed yet at Fox while Ansley was there as John mentions. Many (actually most) guns that were used by high average shooters at the time were no more than tightly choked field configured guns. No vent ribs, very few beavertail forends, fewer stocks of high trap dimensions. Widespread use of guns with these features only came with the introduction of single barrel trap guns, most of which included all of these features from the beginning. My first year Parker single trap was stocked at 14 3/4" pull and drops of 1 1/4" and 1 7/8", very modern dimensions. Double guns with similar dimensions were very scarce in 1917.

Baker SBT guns had vented ribs from the get go circa 1909. I dont know of any other American makers to beat Baker with the vent rib.

I think John is wondering why the innovative Fox didnt come up with the idea while he was heading the company, being that he was a competitive trap shooter.

In the days right around the turn of the century, the Grand American at Live Birds was still a vivid memory even after it was discontinued. Live bird shooting was still very popular and a single barrel was not a gun that could be used for that type of competition. It probably never entered Ansley's fertile mind as a competition gun while he was "in charge". I still regret that I did not add the last Fox single (#400,568) to my collection when it was offered for sale several years ago at a very reasonable price. The seller didn't have a letter on the gun so I made up my mind if the documentation on the gun was interesting, I would buy it. I read the order card for the gun and it was much less than interesting. The purchaser's name was not mentioned and the gun was not the last gun shipped nor was there any evidence that it was the last gun built. It's only claim to fame was that it had the highest serial number recorded in the order cards. There may even be a higher number single out there with a corresponding, but missing, order card.

I didn't see any Fox singles this weekend, but I did see a number of other nice SBTs at an auction

This LC Smith went for $1900

This Ithaca 5e went for $1200

This Baker went for $850,

I was never really interested in them before, but they seem like neat guns. Are there numbers of Single BBls made by firm(strictly talking American classics)? Who made the most? I would be interested in seeing a break down if anyone had it.

That is not a 5E Ithaca, looks like a 4E, but all three guns are very nice, especially the Baker. What is the grade of the Smith? Which auction house displayed these guns? We would like to view the catalog. Thanks.

Hunter Arms Co. made 2511 single barrel traps and the L.C. Smith Gun Co. made another 155.

A.H. Fox Gun Co. serial number only go from 400000 to 400568.

The Ithaca factory estimated they made 4700 Flues model single barrel traps before they switched to the Knickerbocker designed gun in 1922. They made 2789 Knicks between 1922 and 1944, and the final total by 1982 was 5740. Everybody else looses!!

reb87,
I have some Baker corespondence that puts them working on their single traps in the fall of 1908. It states that they were having some barrels made in Europe and already had advance orders for some higher grades. Prices from $75-$150
