This morning was nice and cool. A good morning to take the Powell Damascus hammer gun to the sporting range…

Is that Gallatin Clays? Looks mighty familiar smile

Another of your nice vintage firearms.

With a fine gun on his arm, a man becomes a sporting gentleman, both on the field and off.

Yes, it is. I am about the last of the original 20 that started it decades ago…

Lovely gun. I have almost it's twin, which I bought from Powell's shop in Birmingham circa 1987. Mine was made 1871.

Reloads. I have saved all my factory 2 1/2 inch hulls and set my Mec 600 jr with a plate on the crimp side, so it will crimp the 2 1/2 inch shells. I also use reclaimed shot and Red Dot powder with wads from Ballistic Products which are made for the 2 1/2 inch shells. I also put an “over the shot” card on top to keep any imperfect shells from leaking shot.

I am going to take it grouse hunting this fall, I plan on using some 1 7/8 inch shells my son found in a pawn shop. I have been shooting grouse with a Burgess wrist slide action shotgun with 2 inch shells that I bought from an estate and another couple of Damascus hammer guns with those short shells…

Does that very nice top-lever hammer gun say E. Green and Son on the lock plate or is that wishful thinking on my part?

I would be cautious about the ex-pawn shop 1 7/8 inch cartridges. Short cases does not necessarily equate to low pressure.
