I would like to have my beaver tail forend turned into a splinter forend. Can anyone tell me who does this kind of work and what will it cost? Thanks, JB

JB, Just thinking... Is the depth of the fore end - the distance from the bottom of the barrels to the exterior bottom of the fore end latch - too much for a splinter? That latch kinda defines the fore end bottom contour. It should be alterable, if needed, by a smith.

If it is a Browning BSS, it will look odd because of the depth of the forend iron. What Yeti said. JR

It is a browning bss. I figured it would be a little on the thick side. A little more like a Merkel forend than an english splinter which I would be okay with. Mr. Hurst I will give you call tomorrow afternoon. Has anyone been down this road with their bss? Thanks, JB

No, but I've been down a few roads that started with a desire for change and a wood rasp. I bet the Jenny Craig program will help, there's a lot of lumber out there on a BSS.

I will be doing something similar on my BSS 20 as soon as I get the second set of barrels fitted. The original gun is a Sporter with the trim beavertail. The second set of barrels has the fat beavertail from a PG gun. Plan is to have the fat forend reshaped and checkered to match the trim Sporter beavertail on the original barrel set. Should be a sweet 2-barrel straight grip set when done (26" LM/IM and 28" M/F). The Chas. Daly and Miroku versions of these guns came with splinters in some cases; I have a Daly 500 in 12 gauge with the splinter and it looks great. Find Larry Brown's article on Miroku doubles in SSM from about four years ago for pics of a bunch of Miroku doubles. There is also a guy who advertises Miroku parts on GunBroker; he may have a splinter that you can just buy.

You know, local shop has 12br 30" Ithaca-SKB 100 BLNE with lovely semi-tail, and professionally fitted Decelerator pad (stock appers uncut) for $825. Which means you can have it for $725 cash. I have seen 20br 25" or 26" Ithaca-SKB 200e (Gander Mtn Fredericksburg, VA), but that had that bloody fugly square b-tail! I had BSS from ca. 1975 and that had genunie Beaver's tail!

I took a b'tail forend from a SKB and took it on a ride through the buzz saw. It was the original "tree wood" and looks like their splinter type but longer. Some shaping was done on the front and sides and now looks like the splinter but about 3/4 inch longer. Wish I would have done this before I had the splinter and buttstock roughed out in English walnut.
