I thought this might be of interest to some of you guys/gals. I'm restocking a Parker CHE 20 gauge for a client that I feel is going to be a wonderful gun when its done. The client lives in South Carolina (soon to be Wisconsin) but we were able to each sit at our computer, review wood blanks in Turkey, and come to a decision to purchase this blank. Is this a great world or what? I took this picture to visualize any changes that I should make before starting with the real finish i.e refining the drop points. Sometimes I see things from a picture that I just don't see holding somethng in my hands. I know that sounds strange but its true.

Nothing short of magnificent Doug! The only thing I would change is that you send the gun to me when you're finished.

I'm going to need to see that in person...my eyes aren't what they used to be. That is a great piece of wood. What does the other side sport?

That's a terrible piece of wood. It's got all kinds of funny lines and swirl marks in it! Droool!

It's not too late to straight-grip it.

John: That is one gorgeous piece of wood. How are you doing the butt, plate, pad or checkered?

George, You have the wrong Mann but its OK John and I have decided we're long lost cousins anyway. The butt is a Parker skeleton butt plate as per original. Steve, If I had had a choice it would have been a straight grip but this gun is as per the original Parker letter - pistol grip and all. The blank is very well balanced side to side as far as figure goes. I've seen Parker A1S's that didn't have wood this nice so the owner should be pleased.

Doug,
Would it be possible to get part of the serial number on this gun? I have had a discussion on the Parker website in regards to the engraving pattern on this gun. This is not typical grade 4 engraving.
Thanks, Derrick

Derrick, the serial # is 1227XX. Does this help you?
Ther are 5 flying ducks on the bottom of the gun. At least this makes more sense to me than an elk on the floor plate.

Is this the gun ( Bernard barreled) sold in the Julia auction earlier this year? I think Bill Schodlatz posted some pics of the really unusual engraving of this gun this spring on this or the other board............ A very nice canvas for your skills Doug!

I don't get the fuss over the engraving. I've seen several C's with this sort of engraving, usually late 1890's to early 1900's. It's not common on the 1910's on up but it shows up fairly often on earlier guns.

Doug, It looks like a basic finish has been applied. I know the better grade wood needs less filling than Juglans Cheapski, but it looks like the grain is filled also.
Interesting that having an abstracted look at the gun via photograph helps get you 'out of the woods' and looking at the forest during the final shaping.
Question: Do you find that having a base finish on the gun helps get the final shaping correct - even though there's a fair job of touch ups? Seems like it's part of getting the forest view.
TIA, Brent

Doug, Why do you do this to me? This is exactly the reason I cancelled my subscription to DGJ and Playboy.
