Darn. I'd check the bbls to see if they're fluid. I'm not so sure they are.

Whitworth was in common use until about 1878 or so. This was followed by Siemens-Martin steel, but this dating would have varied by maker, dependent on suppliers, stock on hand, price point, etc.

According to Greener, if those are Whitworth barrels, there should be a wheatsheaf mark on them.

Here is the link to the recent thread on steel barrels.

With that load, this was a solidly built gun.

Thank you PeteM. I thought that it was a tangent/subtopic within a topic.

Kind Regards,

Thanks Gents,

Lots of great info.

I find no other marks on barrels, a few #'s none of which match any other #'s on gun.

How could I verify that it is not Damascus without damaging it?

Thanks

Wipe the bbls down and take a good long look at them in direct light. Look real hard for patterns that look like finger prints. Repeat. This is what I've always done.

You can also rub some kind of acid on them - like in a spot covered by the forend. I'm not sure what you use, though. Hopefully, someone will be along who knows what to use.
