I have now read every single red oil post on this site. It was all very interesting. Mr Damascus and Mr Salopian and others thank you for sharing your knowledge. My question is how well does this finish hold up out in the weather? Your regular every day hunting weather. I may have missed this info in all the post I read, but I dont remember anything about it. Mr Damascus used talc to fill the grain. How does this hold up in rainy weather? Just curious to see how it works for everybody.

What ClapperZapper said. I use Johnson's Paste Wax. No oil finish is impervious to moisture. Neither is varnish, shellac, or any other common gunstock finish. Some are better than others, but even gunstocks finished with synthetic polyurethane finishes will shrink and swell due to changes in humidity.

I like Min Wax paste finishing wax better than Johnsons...both turn water pretty good but the Johnsons has a strong oder to it..not sure it may have naptha in it.
The key to using either one us not to let it dry. Time you apply it to one side buff it off...cheese cloth works good for both the application and the buff.

I have been using actual Slackum finish from England for years Then I was using Trade secret now my supply has run out and I can't get the Trade Secret any longer. I have mixed up the recipes posted by others that are the "London oil finish" but they do not set up like the slackum or trade secret did, where they got very tacky and that was when I rubbed in the talc as I rubbed off the oil. The recipes I followed just seem to dry without getting that gummy sticky consistency. Is there something I am missing?

Did you ever try rottenstone, rather than talc- for the 'rub off' phase-- ?? RWTF

I can not say if you did something wrong but I can tell you I had the same results. I now apply red oil first and finish with a modified oil with Alkenet root powder mixed in, polishing out and filling the pores with rotten stone. Works great. Good thread here with comments at the end from Duane Wiebe that I find interesting. http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/7971019521/m/3091026942
