Was looking at a German guild gun the other day which had a silver receiver and no case color visible including the forend iron, anyone know if this is a decent steel compared to some of our American counterparts? The gun has a high level of craftsmanship otherwise, sideclips, cheekpiece, cocking indicators, scalloped receiver. G

Unless receiver is made out of Dural or Ergal it's worn off, or polished off (Flitz metal polish does particularly good job on cc receivers ). Germans used quality steel for their sporting arms. Matter of fact besides last ditch military Mausers I don't recall seeing a bad one. Some were extremely 'long in the tooth', but one could tell quality of construction and materials were there.

I have seen some Sauers that had polished actions. A very few were built of an aluminum alloy.
A magnet will decide that issue.
The laws of probability dictate that this is a polished steel gun and should be discounted (in price) as such.
Now---There was no guild system in Germany at any time. Small makers abounded. Do not discount a gun because it does not have a name. The quality of the individual piece is the only consideration.
Best,
John
