Both gum rubber and dry board erasers work well. If you have access to a scrap yard, old car frames have a wide variety of hard rubber blocks, wedges, and bushings that can be shaped and adapted.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.
