For more detailed information, good photos of the barrel flats and all proofs and other markings would be helpful for those whose knowledge you are trying to draw upon.
Well done on figuring out posting pics. We have a few long time users who still haven't got it down. LOL

A nice little drilling from the 1880s or c.1890. If the bores are as good as the outside, there is some value in it no doubt. If selling I would price it at $1,500. If buying, I would offer $750. Not that I would like to make a big profit, I just don't "need" another drilling, and they are slow to move at "retail". But if you really like it, and maybe even "need" it, and reloading is no problem to you, $1,000 would be a very fair offer. IMHO of course.
With kind regards, Jani

gjk, I can't say, for sure, that the drilling was made in 1891; but I can say it was made before 1893. In early 1893, it would have been required that it be proofed, and no proof marks are shown in the photos. If it had been completed before May of 1893, but still "in stock" then, it would have a "crown V" stamped on it, in lieu of proofmarks. This means it was not only made before May 1893, it was also sold before then. As to the question of caliber, absent proofmarks the only way to know is through making a chamber cast and "slugging" the barrel. This seems to be a nice old drilling, you are lucky. Mike.

Ah, with the example being devoid of marks & along with the wedge crosspin, flash protector & large strikers, I'd guess the Roux action variant w/ a horn pistol grip was peddled in the mid to late 1880s. We can be certain the GM initials are not for Gebrüder Merkel as it was formed later. But I'd hedge my bets toward Gustav Meffert or Georg Meffert and I'm sure there are others. Hans Christoph Georg Stein must have been active earlier in the 19th Century and it appears his successor Jobst Berger took the reins circa 1885. So if that holds true, it would date to 1885. I guess the 91 could represent 1891 but if there is another 91 on any other component, it would be a serial nummer or assembly number.
Cheers,

The "91" appears on the butt plate only.

But you still need to pull the locks & inspect the frame to see if "91" was applied to either.
