Many, many thanks to Igor Robertovich who graciously provided a more accurate translation of Buturlin's steel strength report.

The numbers here were for yield, rather than ultimate tensile strength
http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbt...&PHPSESSID=

Sergei Aleksandrovich Buturlin (1872-1938) was a Russian Ornithologist who also published extensively on hunting and sporting arms, including Drobovoe Ruzhze IstrelzBa Iz Nego (The Shotgun and Shooting It) in 1929. No English translation of the several editions exists.

Buturlin cited studies conducted at TOZ (Tula Arms Plant) likely immediately before WWI.

The study summary in a better format
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dnRLZgcuHfx7uFOHvHCUGnGFiLiset-DTTEK8OtPYVA/edit

..........Steel Type............................Strength in PSI
.............................................Yield...............Ultimate
Damascus.............................31,300 – 52,600.....56,900 – 68,250
Russian Siemens-Martin............39,800 – 54,000.....85,300 – 92,400
Winchester Standard Ordnance........39,400...............59,150
.....(Likely "Rolled" Bessemer)
Winchester Nickel (introduced 1896)...88,600..............108,350
Mosin 7.62 mm rifle.......................85,300..............121,150
Krupp “Special”............................81,000..............138,350
.....(Likely Spezial Gewehr Lauf Stahl/ "Special Gun Barrel Steel" introduced 1895)
Krupp "Nirosta".............................85,300..............113,750
.....(Nichtrostender Stahl Austenitic 21% Chromium / 7% Nickel Stainless introduced in 1913)
Boehler "Blitz"...............................65,400.............94,000
Boehler "Antinit"............................116,600............138,000
.....(Rostfrei Laufstahl chrome-molybdenum-vanadium steel introduced in 1912)

The highest Damascus number is impressive, but there is no way to know what patterns were tested frown Bernard? Herringbone/Corche? Chine?
The average tensile strength in my study for Crolle Damascus was 54,500 psi.

Thanks again Igor and may God fill you with His strength and peace in your fight

Am working on the date of introduction of Böhler Antinit Laufstahl. I found mention of a 1913 advertisement listing "Antinit".

How long was the 'Star of David' trademark used? This is a pre-1924 J.B. Ronge & Son, Liege

Thanks all.

IGOR: did Buturlin provide a date of the tensile strength testing? It had to be after the introduction of Krupp "Nirosta" in 1913. There appears to be a '1925' with the Russian Siemens-Martin steel. Thanks again!!

Drew:

I did not realize that Siemens-Martin steel was sourced from so many different countries (makes sense, I just hadn't thought about it like that). I assume that means an additional variable needs to be considered?

Lloyd - Siemens-Martin process steel was likely made all over the world. And it is clear that the composition and strength thereof changed over time.
I know little about that new fangled fluid steel stuff, but following the introduction of Krupp Fluss Stahl and Krupp Nickel Steel, both about 1890, gun barrel steels changed (for the better) rapidly.
Winchester Nickel Steel was introduced for the Model 1894 rifle about 1896, Marlin “Special Smokeless Steel” was introduced for the Model 1893 rifle in 1897, and Remington Ordnance Steel was introduced in 1897 for the 1894 Hammerless Double; all with tensile strength 100,000 - 110,000.
Hunter Arms introduced Crown steel with their Pigeon Gun in 1893.

Irrelevant but interesting. Armistice Day was Nov. 11 1918. By the March/April "Motor" magazine Boehler was advertising

"Tool steel, construction steel and forgings for cars and aircraft."

Hause:

Me thinks it arrived on the scene around the time Poldi's Antikorro(1910) surfaced &(Acier Comprime de Wahlreyne Rust Proof -May 6th 1913 - Webley, Lebeau - Courally)

Böhler Antinit - C-0,117% Mn-0,49% Si-0.299 Ni-8,51%
Poldi Anticoro - C-0,145% Mn-0,50% Si-0,45% Ni-7,78%

I'll try to dig a bit. But I would hasten to say the bulk of the Boehler steel tubes were rolled in Liege.

Drew,

Buturlin composed his table partly on the basis of laboratory test data which were held at the TOZ (Tula arms plant)before WWI.

According to Buturlin`s data

Russian rifle steel: C 0,42-0,55 Mn 0,5-0,7 Si 0,2-0,3
Krupp special 0,61 - 0,65 - 0,434
Boehler "Antinit" 0,177 - 0,49 - 0,299 plus Ni 8,51
"Poldi Anticorro" 0,145 - 0,5 - 0,45 plus Ni 7,78

Regards,

Igor

P.S. Thank you very much for your kind words

P.P.S. Raimey was faster smirk

Böhlerscher „Antinit“ Stahl / Böhlerläufe „Antinit“ / Böhler „Antinit“ Stahl must have arrived on the scene in 1912 as „Schuß und Waffe“ Band VII(sogar 83 kg/mm a Streckgrenze)/ Schuss & Waffe, Volume 7(1913) has a couple articles describing it.
