I was preparing a barrel for browning yesterday and used a Scotch abrasive pad with water and detergent for initial preparation. I was amazed how much of the original finish became apparent as I cleaned. This could be a moderate restoration for barrels that have light patina and grunge on them. Pictures below. Hi,
Thanks for sharing this. I would like to try this on two different barrels I have.
Which detergent did you use? And what % detergent vs water mix?

I used a couple of squirts of the Orange Palmolive Antibacteriald dishwashing detergent in warm water.

Leighton, I've gotten the same kind of improvement in barrels with an even patina by spraying them down with WD-40 and letting them sit awhile before rubbing with 0000 steel wool. WD-40 seems to loosen loosely bound rust, but does not remove the more tightly bound rust of the original blue or brown. That is why I never use WD-40 on freshly rust blued or browned barrels.
In case anyone does not already know, different colors of Scotchbrite pads have different abrasive grits impregnated. The chart Ken61 provided a link to is very helpful, but I'm surprised it does not have the grit equivalent for the commonly seen green Scochbrite. I know green is coarser than the maroon used here by Stallones. A very fine Scotchbrite would be advised for this type of clean-up.

Green Scotchbrite is roughly equivalent to 600 grit.

Green Scotchbrite is very effective in totally removing bluing. Especially if used with Naval Jelly.
Those barrels look like they could go right into a logwood soak.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.
