Gentlemen: I've acquired a beautiful French 12 bore that I've not been able to identify. The only name on the receiver is on the cover plate "Dubois Lagny". I"ve asked my friend Geoffroy Gournet if he is familiar with this; his reply was that it was most likely a store/dealer, as it is not uncommon to have the dealer name on the cover plate. Intriguing, though, is a lion stamp on the water table, along with the PS under crown proof mark. Geoffroy says it looks like a Peugeot stamp, or perhaps Berthon Freres. Anyone know about Peugeot shotguns? I've got some good photos but don't really know how to get them on this post. This is one of the sexiest receivers I've evere seen, beautifully sculpted fences and engraving; also, the gun's got Leopold Bernard barrels. Any help would be appreciated. Craig Libhart

Craig,
If you want to email the pics I will host them for you. I had a nice time shooting with you at the LC event last month. mfitt@optonline.net

Craig, I'd concur with what M. Gournet told you about the name on the gun. Peugeot did indeed make shotguns. I've owned one, seen a couple others. But other than the fact they're out there, can't tell you much about them.

The PS proofmark LIKELY indicates a pre 1900 build date-one could (and, can) still get PS proofing, but, PT came along in 1900 and the very great majority of guns built after 1900 are, indeed, proofed for French powder T. That barrel maker was no slouch, either. The very great majority of Bernard barreled guns I've seen were Paris proofed. Would be good if we can see the flats in a photo. Sounds like a nice gun. Best, Ted

Craig, Please post the pictures. Here is the FAQ for posting images. http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=6339&page=1#Post6339Bernard damascus was a more expensive tube. Depending on the time frame it was as much as 10X more expensive than lower end damascus barrels. Not all barrel making shops had the skill to produce it. So it was usually only placed on higher end guns. Pete

Pete and everyone else: Thanks for your replies and the info about the place to put photos. I'll try and have something on there today yet, if I can figure out the process. I hadn't really thought that these barrels were Damascus, although I guess they could be; they ring like the Bells of St. Mary's. Also, they have obviously been re-blacked; can Damascus be rust blued to hide the figure? Anyway, I'll do my best with the pics;thanks again. Craig

CL - Yes, damascus barrels can be blued/blacked to hide the figure from any but the most carful inspection. Strong sunlight will almost always show the figure through.

Jeff,
Your bar-in-wood is beautiful! Oddly enough, I saw a photo of another one yesterday on the cover of the e-zine "Double Gun Classics", March-April 2007 issue. Maker is Phillip Ollendorff;current manufacture, 28 gauge. It is way beyond my price range, I'm sure, but those are the most elegant shotgun actions I've seen. I have two hammer guns that are bar-in-wood, but had not seen hammerless until yesterday.

Hi Terry, Glad you liked the pic. It is a 20 Ga. with 28" barrels and weighs just 5lbs. It is the best buy I ever made at under $300, I did put about $1300 more into it to get it fixed up a bit. It is my favorite grouse gun. Jeff G.
