I hope I'm in the right spot here. I'm looking at a VL&D gun from what I suspect is in the 1930s. Side-plated boxlock ejector w/a stylized gold American eagle on the bottom of the action. Lots of engraving elsewhere (ducks, snipe, herron, grouse and quail) and 2 3/4 chambers. The gun has seen very litte use.
How do you identify the date of manufacture?
Thanks!

What's the serial #? What gauge is it?
I think the last VL&D Francottes were right around 1930.
The 45/Eagles are real nice shotty guns.

OWD- sn here is 847xx and its a 12. Obviously built for the American market, the eagle has the classic shield in its talons.

Around 1927. Is this it: http://juliaauctions.com/auctions/view_lot_info.asp?lot=2409-327That one sold for $4600 with the premium. Those were all made for the American market. The Eagle was the highest grade boxlock that VL & D brought in. They were very expensive guns in their day, right up there with the finest Parkers. OWD

Thanks! Not the same gun. Better wood and an older leather covered pad.

Serial number chart, with dates of manufacture, is on this website in "Other Useful Information" category. The "shield in talons" has less to do with proving it was made for the American market than the fact that it was imported by an American company. G&H should have records on your gun.

G & H may not have the records. Check their web site and see if your serial number is listed. Some of the records for VL & D have been lost. Bob Beach does a wonderful job on the many guns they have records on with history etc.. He can at least date guns that have no records available.

"May not have the records" ?? Give us the serial number and we'll tell you whether they have the records.

Thanks! Simply post pictures of the proof marks. After 1924 all Belgian guns had a date code. http://damascus-barrels.com/Belgian_All_Proofmarks.htmlPete

I get 1927-28 with that SN. 1927 date code would be a script f, 28 would be g.
