A little trick a buddy and I use to use is the "broomstick in the case"; when going to a gun show place a broom stick in the gun case and tell the wife you going to sell one of your guns.If you happened to find a gun at the show toss the stick and you can get back in the house with a full case and a "no one wanted to buy it" story !
Of course a safe is neccessary to keep the growing collection hidden.

Get a nice cabinet. Put the cheaper stuff in it. Then get as big as safe as you require for "storage' of reloading supples, and other 'gun-ny junk'. tools, guns which you 'picked up for a song', but 'need some work', etc. The large utilitarian looking box can go about anywhere it can be structurally attached to the house: workshop, etc.

With a little creative shuffling, keeping longarms in fabric gun slips, etc you will an invaluable resource for y'r hobby. I suggest a few ED1 purchased at a fire sale, for the lovely cabinet. Gaudy, cheap and dispensible with the firing pins removed. A nickled, extended mag 870 Mariner 12 ga and shell belt with a flashligh would be handy emergency equipment, too.

Lovely furniture, there. Encourage you wife to pick the stain color and hardware design.

A furniture quality secure gun cabinet will typically cost much more than a comparably-sized safe. Go for secure instead of pretty and you sleep better. My safe is secure in my very own garage, which is seperate from hers. The good stuff lives there, away from anyone's prying or questioning eyes.
And don't ever count them or mention a number. That way you can honestly say "I don't know honey..."

A friend of mine bought his first large gunsafe some 25yrs back. He had a custom car lettering/pinstriping painter come in and paint "Bank of (wife's name)" in gold letters in an arc, honoring her contribution to his collection. The safe was a glossy, well finished Browning safe. When all pinstriped and lettered, it was a nice piece of furniture.

Make sure you get a fire safe. A lot of guns wind up charcoal and disfigured metal. Build/have built a wooden box around it if you want furniture. Keep it locked, too.

Although the general consensus seems to be that I should get a safe, I don't have much room in the house.

mtwoodson, however, brings up an interesting possibility which is to put a safe in the garage. My garage is attached and gets a little bit of heat in the winter (because some return air ducts run through it) and stays relatively cool during the summer (the outer wall is 1.5ft thick stone). It does get a little moist, however.

Would I run into rust, moisture, hot/cold problems in the garage? Or would a golden rod take care of it? (I seem to recall a post about this way back when, but don't recall the outcome.)

A safe in the garage really would be the ideal solution, but I don't want to take any chances.
