Can't offer much help on the date but thIs is the Brescia model which was their base hammer gun. I would think its more rare than the sidelock models. I havE owned several hammer guns from Bernardelli and IMO they are the best value in the hammer gun market. You can't go wrong with it.
I would take this Bernardelli over the Ugartechea... No questions.

1. You date Italian guns by proof marks. 2. IMO "Special Extra" is supposed to mean similar to "Top" here; we are talking barrel steel, not the gun as a whole. 3. IMO Yes. 4. Very good gun but I don't like two features on mine: hammer spurrs are too far apart for quick one hand cocking, and the gun cannot be opened with hammers cocked; that's why the Bernardelli stays home while my Famars Castore goes out. 5. IMO this one is better than the Spanish one.
With kind regards, Jani

Hi Pat, I also have a Bernadelli Hammergun (12ga), mine is the Italia model. Never one problem with her, handles very well, nice balance and a quality piece. I use mine for duck hunting and it's proved it's worth in the blind over the past few years. I had Briley install their thin wall steel shot tubes and had Mark Larson "enhance the stock (the wood on mine was as plain as all get out!) I agree with Adam and Jani, these guns are getting hard (and in 20ga even harder) to find and the quality is excellent. I'd go with the Bernadelli, but then again, I like hammerguns. Bernadelli made three grades of hammerguns, the Bescia (looks like the model you posted, from what I can tell on my crappy monitor), the Italia and the Italia Special. All three are the same action/gun, just better/more engraving and perhaps a bit better finished. These are excellent guns! You can use this link to see the year the gun was made: http://www.gun-data.com/italiandatecodes2_arms.htmlHere's a pic of my Bernadelli Italia: Good luck on your search!!! Best! Greg

Greg:
Is that the original wood on your Italia, or did you do an upgrade? I know the one I owned never had anything approaching the figure yours has.
Wish I still had it. Sold it to Jim Legg a few years before he passed.

I have the same Bernardelli, but not as nice. The hammers on mine are not to uncomfortably far enough apart to cock both with the span of one thumb. Is the Bernardelli stronger gun than the Uggie? I don't know but I have NEVER seen an Uggie with the lever left of center. Here is an Ugartechea Model 221 20 ga. (a model 30 with chopper lump barrels) with one barrel set up for a wildcat 35X30-30. I have also seen an Ugartechea factory 'Deer hunter's Special' on what looked like a white model 30 frame with a deer on each side of the receiver and open chokes. I think we all know how stout deer loads are.

I had a 20 ga Bernardelli Italia for years and was delighted with it. It was deadly on grouse, dove and stupid pheasants. (Sometimes the smart ones got away.) T'was my favorite hammer gun ever.

Hi Pat' Yep, my first hammer gun was the mid grade Italia , I think. 12 bore ,28" (+/-) bbls, 7lb 2oz, lovely gun I got for about $800 about 8 years ago...good "modern" hammer gun ,seemed to handle lovely, good for factory loads. The wood was plain, the engraving wasn't that great, but was a good strong gun that I shot pretty well Every one who has had one seems to like them...but the prices being asked has gone up some lately, from what I've seen. Sold it to help buy a much older hammer gun, after the hammer bug bit They seem to a great gun to test the water about hammer guns cheers franc
