Gentlemen,

just recently I received a 1905 made Westley Richards shotgun with detachable locks ("droplocks") in its original case with all accessories. The gun has an unique history and will be presented in detail later.

Meanwhile, I have a question regarding an accessory I haven't seen before. This is a tin box containing a pad originally impregnated with "Selvyt". Obviously, the box/pad is for cleaning the locks. I'm also aware of the Selvyt company and the Selvyt products.

Question: has anybody seen before such a tin box for the Westley Richard with droplocks? If so: did the design change over the years?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Martin

PLease note the tin does say Hand Detachable Locks . Not "drop locks" as so many people refer to them .

I've never seen a box in person but IIRC in his book "Shotguns By Keith", Elmer Keith has a picture of his extra set of Westley Richards locks in its box.

If or when your remove the locks, please follow the instruction on the box lid to cock them first. If not, you will have a very inconvenient time of it.

The Sevlyt cloth was a registered tradename by D. Scott in 1893 and by very early 1897 there was some drama between D. Scott, a cat named Hallworth and Jones fella over dusters made on the Sevlyt theme but had the name Velutina??? Hallworth registered the tradename Velutina in 1887 while in the velvet trade. Maybe it was Jones that attempted to take out some sort of patent in 1891 but Hallworth had cornered the velvet market and the drama commenced. Anyway, it was touted as some upper rung cloth and gunmakers seem glad to add it to their list of accoutrements. Holland & Holland, http://www.hollandandholland.com/product_single.php?i=84&m=shooting , Purdey & Westley Richards still peddle them today.

Kind Regards,

Very cool. I've never seen that before.

Do you have pics of the rest of the gun? I would love to see them.

Apparently WR does not see the difference:

Here is the court case Raimey referred to:

Martin, a very unique item.

Gentlemen,

thank you very much for your friendly comments and hints. Also, the historical background of the “Selvyt” trademark infringement case is most interesting. But I’m really surprised, that nobody has seen such a tin before. Well, I haven’t seen such a tin before – but I haven’t seen as many WR as you experts for English doubles here, of course.

I’m well aware of this, rest assured! I’m lucky enough to have an original “manual” which came with the gun explaining how to take out the locks. Unfortunately, the “small cap” (made of rubber?) mentioned and shown in the one page advise is not included in the accessory “pack”.

Yes, I have photos of the „rest“. But I’ll present the gun not before I will have received a copy from WR’s ledger. Although I know exactly, who the first owner was – the exact date he bought it is more interesting for me. Just a hint: the gun belonged for 105 years to one family and was bought from the grand-grandson of the first owner just recently. The history is well documented and is not one of the “the guy I have it from told me” stories…..

Pete, I may be mistaken, because the only Westley in my collection right now is an eight gauge bar in wood, but I believe the Ovundo is also equipped with "drop locks" rather than sideplate mounted locks. I believe that WR does recognize the difference.
