For those of you interested in a refined linseed oil finish, I'm happy to report that Linspeed brand stock finish is back on the market. I used this as a final finish for many years because it give the look of linseed but dries fast and hard.
Here is an excerpt from an email from the company's Owner.

"As it regards your question on Lin-Speeds makeup - the base oil Lin-Speed is made from is a highly refined linseed oil. In its raw form it is the color and consistency of honey. I mix this thick oil with mineral spirits and other proprietary ingredients to make Lin-Speed. It is a unique product that was invented by George V.V. Brothers of Great Barrington, Massachusetts back in the early 1950's. So as you can see it is really not polyurethane at all but a real oil finish."

They can be contacted at: Lin-Speed Oil <linspeedoil@yahoo.com>
for those of you that would like to obtain the product directly. I'll be testing and writing about Linspeed sometime in the future.
Best,
Steve

How durable is the stuff to wet snow and wet wool gloves? Those are my most problematic issues for hunting rifles. Not so much a problem for target rifles.

I like this stuff as well, and I've wondered if anyone has tried
mixing some oil-soluble red dye in Linspeed oil.

I haven't seen Linspeed oil in 40 years and have never used it, but that is all my father-in-law ever used on his guns. Anyone see a problem in using Linspeed to refresh an old oil finish or to do minor touch-ups? I'm also guessing that it would work better with a little thinner or mineral spirits?

Another great use is for the butt when installing a pad.... dries real quick so you can keep working.

Since it is not a poly, I have been told any oil finish will eventually succumb to moisture. I love to mix Minwax wipe on with tru-oil ...I figure I get the best of both world.

I've only used Linspeed as a top coat, or final finish.

I've always liked Linspeed, quick drying, and I can get everything from a high gloss finish to an oil look depending on how I rub it out.

did not know they went away for a while.
