Very nice indeed.....quality craftsmanship.....looks like it was originally proofed in 1962, then followed by 73 & 78....

Raimey, on the earlier thread about Lovena guns I had started while trying to decide whether to buy this gun or not, you posted a link to a Lovena 16 gauge boxlock at Gulf Coast Guns. You also mentioned you had handled that gun. If you can recall, do you think it had been re-stocked?

Regards,

James

PS Thanks for poking at me about the pictures. Got off my duff and got the camera thing sorted out!

A nice one indeed! However it looks much older than the proof dates visible.
With kind regards,

I'm curious why it was proofed 5 times, with 4 being in the Czech Republic. Is there at monogram of a stylized "M" intertwinded with a "S" on the standing breech or is that scratches? A fine example by the craftsmen in Weipert probably either just before WWI or during. My guess is that it was sourced from Wenzel Moregenstern, who would have sourced the components and may have subed the work. About this time his masters numbered a few over a baker's dozen for assembly work. The engraving, the sideframe reinforcement as well as the rose & scroll engraving are similar to those of Wenzel Morgenstern. Then it went to Suhl, Germany and was proofed pre-1923 before the Germans assumed control of the Weipert facility circa 1940, still allowing the proofhouse to use the escutcheon of the falling fir tree(which one can see very well on these stamps) topped with either 2 crossed hammers. A pic of the lower rib just may reveal the preliminary data string giving the year it was made. If it was an example from the 1930s, I'd expect to see a rampant lion, which 1st saw use sometime between 1928 & 1931.

Thanks for the effort on the pics as it was worth it. I'm not sure on the Lovena from Gulfcoast Guns but the fellas peddling it were well suited to restock it but from memory I don't think it was.

Kind Regards,

Raimey, I can't even see what you are thinking may be a stylized "M" AND "S" so I can't tell you if it's just scratches or a monogram of some sort.

I tried to get some pics of the lower rib.

Thanks canvasback for all the effort and there looks to be a couple of numbers just ahead of the flats but for now I can't say what part they play. With the "Eagle Crown/S" high on the tubes, I wonder if the tubes were sourced from Germany and this accounts for the lack of the Weipert preliminary stamp of an intertwined script "E" "W"? Although that doesn't really make any sense. Poldi Anticorro/Antikorro/AK arrived on the scene circa 1910( http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbt...true#Post202701 ) so it was completed post 1910. Quite the puzzle as it seems there are some Weipert perliminary marks missing or the tubes experienced perliminary proof elsewhere before arriving in Weipert. It is also missing the Weipert Nitro stamp. Maybe it was ordered in the white from Suhl prior to 1923??? I've seen that mark on the lower rib before but can't place it at the moment. The frame still makes me want to hold with Wenzel Morgenstern for now.

Raimey

If it helps you, the numbers just ahead of the flats are 238 on one barrel and 39 on the other.
