Dove season opened this morning and I used a Parker VHE. First couple of rounds went fine but it doubled 2 times afterwards. It is going to the Gunsmith but I was curious as what makes this happen.

Could be it needs an interior cleaning. Or, the sears are worn a bit. Cleaning is the first thing I'd do.

Gunk, dirt or grime.

Other option is to load one shell and do not miss. Unless shooting a pair the second shell is just for your screw ups.

often times the sear angle needs some attention.

I assume it is the left sear that releases when you fire the right. If you were to fire the barrels in the reverse order next time you use it (before you take it to the 'smith) you might be able to determine if the second sear (presumably the left) might need the attention--rather than working them both over. The tips, if they are stoned to change the angle, should be rehardened when you get them right. The problem could be something other than the sear tip; it could be the stock has swelled for some reason and is impinging on the sears so they aren't engaging fully. That would require blacking it down, not a big job but takes some time. Hope this helps.

I have had a Parker Bros. gun double fire before and so has a friend. In both cases it was a worn sear. Larry Delgrego & Sons in Ilion NY can repair it. They have the original Parker machine tool that will restore the proper angle/edge on the original sears. It is a quick process. Continued doubling risks cracking your stock. Additionally a weak sear can allow a gun to fire if it is jarred, even with the safety on. Best to get it fixed.

Steve Bertram (SKB) repaired a Miroku/Daly model 500 12ga for me that developed a doubling problem last year during duck season. That gun really belted me a couple of times when two high speed steel 2s went off at once; no articulated front trigger on that gun so I still have a scar where it peeled the meat off the front of my middle finger that morning.

Steve's repair was promply done and returned and not expensive. He reshaped the sear angles and even asked me what I wanted the new trigger pulls to be. My highest recomendation!...Geo
