I can't see a single part of that gun that has not been abused. Somebody should call Gun Protective Services. What a piece of toast.

Shame ,but its time this old Gal was quietly put to sleep. If you can find out who did what was done to it ,put them down as well. I've seen some appalling things done to guns over the years and this ranks well up the list. I geuss if you have a lot of money ,time and the inclination then a total rebuild ,restock and reforend ,might save it. But if you have to ask how much ? You know the rest.

Folks, this gun has a story to tell--way more than most seen on this board. This is not the result of some hack gunsmith but the product of necessity, hard times and a bit of backwoods ingenuity. I'll guess that most of the "repairs" were done during the depression, or later in the Appalachias. No way or money to get a proper repair so pick up whatever is available 'n figure out how to make it good. Put it in a prominent place on your wall and every once in awhile let it remind you how fortunate we all are.
When an old man dies a library burns to the ground. (Old African proverb)

Well...it's romantic to think the gun was screwed up by some desperate chap trying to keep his family fed (Jed Clampett?) but it's just as feasible that it was owned by some clunk who generally abused it and decided he would do a little of his own gunsmithing while he watched Lawrence Welk.
People are generally screwy....a close relative of mine owned a machine shop for 30 years and kept every machine in 'eat off of it' condition. But then every three years he was buying a new truck and cursing the maker of the old one for building such a piece of junk. Of course, in those three years he never once washed the exterior, cleaned the interior, or opened the hood. Imagine a three year old truck with 130,000 miles that had never had the oil changed.

I've known poor, and poor people take care of what they have. Poor doesn't mean that kind of neglect. Those guns were built to last. With a little oil and cleaning, which cost nothing, that gun wouldn't have suffered every screw marred. The top bolt...how does one end up like that even in 80 years? That gun was thrashed by some cruel masters.

No, I just don't agree. Poor people don't take of what they have any more or less than rich people or average income people. I know plenty of poor people who do stupid things with their possessions. Often involving alcohol but not always.
