Last Saturday at the Albany show Amoskeag Auction, in their display of stuff coming up at their March 27 sale, had a very odd Oberndorf 98 with rear square bridge, I thought it was a G&H but it is apparently only half G&H, has G&H marks and ser. no. 343 but is also marked Made by L.G. Thomas, Shreveport, Louisiana. This is a new name to me ..... anyone know of him? Slathered top and bottom of action with excellent Fugger engraving. Quarter rib, express sights in clear G&H style, G&H mount. .257 Roberts. For 343 to be a G&H ser. no. is odd as I don't know that .257 had been introduced that early, maybe it had. Stock styling is early postwar G&H. Did not ask estimate. Overall quite a splendid rifle.

In response to my PM, Michael has reminded me that Thomas was a well known maker of match triggers for Win 52 and Rem 37. I think this was in the 40s and 50s. But a custom rifle by him is new to me, especially such an elaborate one.

Mark,

I saw the gun at the Louisville show in December. I believe the s/n 343 is Thomas' number. The top of the barrel reads something like "No 343 Made by L.G. Thomas, Shreveport, Louisiana" then on top of the quarter rib, "Engraved by Griffin & Howe". I took it to mean that the rifle was made up by Thomas, then sent to G&H for engraving.
