I've asked this once before..but didn't get a firm answer if I remember right. This thing about your garden variety two bbl lump gun ...One of those Best Gun things like Art' Trigger, Bushed Pins etc Supposedly better if lumps do not protrude through the bottom of the action, at least that's the general idea that I've read. I often ponder this...seems to me that it would be way easier to take some "Fat" off the bottom of the lumps so that they lay atop the upper/inside of the bottom of the action. It seems like a real lot of work to make those two lump holes in the action bottom with the way the lumps arc through the holes, & try to make things look seamless?? Or is there more to it..like a strength/design issue?? Love to get this Q sorted...So Gunnies please respond Bless ye one n all Franc

The action is considered stronger without through lumps. The machining of the action was much more difficult as well. Imagine trying to get the blind square holes tight against the lumps. It's alot of work.
Out there doing it best I can.

I think the smooth bottom action just made for a nicer canvas for the engraver.

These are both Best Guns...one lump and no lump. The gun on the left is a 1881 W.C.Scott Premier the other is an 1879 Purdey.

Actually the gun with one lump is the better built gun.

ClapperZ Just looked @ my very nice Belgian SLE,with no visable lumps . The bottom flats of lumps must just miss bottoming out on flat bottom of action body. This seems way easier than cutting precise holes to let the lumps through the action floor. I just mean to say I think it strange that the harder (If I'm right)way..lumps showing..has been linked to not so well regarded Guns. CrossChissles...SDH...SKB etc...??????? Franc
