when it comes to steel-framed pumps the small-bore ithaca and remington 17 are the best upland guns out there. i have both winchester 12 (1916 vintage) and ithaca (1956 vintage) and handled 20ga Remington 31 and have to say the ithaca is best handling gun.
another good pre-war one was montgomery ward or riverside slide-action by j. stevens arms (proly browning design). kinda ugly but in 20ga a joy to behold.

Here is a pair of M37 16 gauges. One is a 1941 gun and the other is a NOS from the former Ithaca owners.-Dick

Those old pumps were all great upland game guns, Model 37, Model 31 and of course the Model 12, but with the Model 12 you're getting that nasty but well deserved reputation it acquired from the German Army's threatened protest during World War One!!!
One thing I'll have to say is for the German Army to raise a protest about a specific weapon, can there be any better praise!!!

Was likely mostly model 1897s that the Germans feared, if you think about it.

Jagermeister, the old Browning designed Stevens (Wards, Sears, Western Auto) 20 ga. humpback pumpers (Mod. 530, I think) are so ugly they are almost handsome. I have one with a 28" full choke barrel that I just can't seem to miss birds with. They are quite rare in 20 ga. but can sometimes be spotted at gun shows, and because not many folks know what they are, they can often be had for under $150. For awhile there, I thought I was the only guy who knew what they were. Chops

What is the retail price of the new Model 37s in 20 or 28 gauge? Ithaca website seemed to be silent on the subject (at least I couldn't find it).

The Model 530 is a double barrel. Was it a Wards Model 550 or a Stevens Model 520?

For the sake of argument, Ted we all can agree on one thing; no firearm has established such a reputation or is held in such high regard in all fields; the hunting field, the trap field or the battlefield as the American pump!!! Be it the M37, the M97, the M12 or M31 or a host of others!!!
