The 870 is easier to single load - if you are open to other Corn Shellers I think the smoothest pump is a Remington Model 31, the best handling is the Model 12, except a Remington Model 17 handles better than a 20 Model 12 (Don are you still my friend ?),and a Mod 37 is a very fine pump.

Pumps are cheap relative to the double guns we discuss here - try a few until you find one that works for you.
