i am headed to az next week for quail hunting. trying to figure out how to get ammo when i there. am i better off just flying with what i can get in the gun case and eating the extra fees?

i used to fly with a gun many times a year and was up on everything, but that was several years ago. plus i never had to worry about a high ammo weight due to rifle ammo and small amounts of shotgun ammo.

any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!

Ammunition

Small arms ammunition for personal use (provided it is properly packed) is permissible in checked baggage only.
The ammunition may be placed in the same container as the firearm and must be securely packed in cardboard (fiber), wood, or metal boxes, or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.
When checking ammunition, Customers are limited to 11 pounds gross weight (ammunition plus container) per person.
Magazines or clips containing ammunition must be securely packaged (placed in another small box or in a secure cutout in the carrying case, in order to protect the primer of the ammunition).
Make sure guns are unloaded and definitely never transport a gun in your carryon baggage!
Gunpowder (black powder) and primers or percussion caps are not allowed in checked or carryon baggage.
Loose ammunition or loose loaded magazines and/or clips are not allowed.

William Larkin Moore in Scottsdale, just off the 101, is worth a visit and they stock 2 1/2" 7/8 oz. 12g, usually 7s and 8s. I've got 2 boxes of 8s if for some reason they are out.

Looks like most, if not all, airlines allow up to 11 pounds ammunition in checked luggage. Require it to be in either fiber, wood, or plastic boxes. I always shoot reloads but am careful to put them in factory cardboard boxes. Never a problem.

Order a flat from RST shipped to your address in Arizona. Or as suggested, contact William Larkin Moore. I am confident Dave or Dan Moore would be happy to set aside enough for you pending your arrival. They are about 15 minutes from Phoenix, Sky Harbor airport by freeway. You didn't say where you will land in AZ so Moore's may not be convenient if you are flying directly into Tucson.

i am going for 3 weeks and staying with a gracious host who is retired and now a full time bird hunter. we are going after all 3 species. he told me some numbers are down, but i will have fun anyway.

don't think i will shoot a whole flat while there but sure would be happy if it turns out like that!

have always loved the wlm site and want to go there since i will be so close. did not realize it and now plan to swing by for sure!

in real life, can you put ammo in a suitcase full of clothes?

On a trip to Canada they confiscated my low pressure relaods for my 192? Birmy sixteen. Packing issue. I bought standard 2-3/4" 1oz 1165fps factory loads and shot them in the gun for two weeks of bird hunting. If I had blown my fingers off it would have been my fault.

Polywad will sell you 2.5" shells in quantities below a full flat. They seem to have a bit less varied selection than RST, but for 6, 7.5, & 8 shot, they'll fix you up, and the price is not astronomical. If the ammo is in original cardboard boxes or equivalent, my reading of the regs is yes, you can stuff a box or two of shells in your suitcase. Always best to call the airline to make sure, though.
