Saw a New Ithaca Gun double tonight. 12ga hammer gun, excellent wood, not much metal finish ... bbls mostly brown, receiver has cc only around the hammer area. There are two screws on the top tang and one small hole behind the forward most top tang screw. Is there suppose to be a screw there and if so what do it do.

Bores are excellent, locks up very tight with or w/o forearm on. Only other issue is the top latch moves back into position slowly ... like molasses. Bbls "appear" to be fluid steel???

It has a banner with flourishes that reads "New Ithaca Gun" on side of receiver.

Is this a buy at $425?

In the late NIG hammer guns the X-Grade had the smokeless powder steel barrels like the cooresponding hammerless Field Grades. Grade-A had Twist barrels like the No. 1 hammerless, and Grade-AA had Damascus barrels like a No. 1 1/2 hammerless. Here is a 1910-vintage A-Grade --
