The folks at the GGCA think the G M mark on the face might mean the action was made by Gebruder Merkel. Does anyone here know what it means? I know the circle represents a miners pan, the sole and pick with the circle are a Suhl mark from long ago. The gun has Suhl proof marks of about 1908. On the rib is inlayed in silver Chr. Hoffacker, Munchen, whom I assume was the retailer in Munich. The Krupp marks on the barrel appear to be hand cut or at least cleaned up by hand.

Yes it is a Merkel stamp & you should also see it in the position of the left side of the aft barrel lug. At a minimum it notes the completion of the sporting weapon in the white & may note the finished product but for now I cannot say how it compares or differs from the monogram of a GM in a shield.





E. Schmidt & Habermann Drilling
Here some are going to argue that this is the stamp of the city of Suhl and true it is but it is either a task or completion mark for either E. Schmidt & Habermann or more so for one of the Brothers Merkel, where the preponderance of evidence is heavily tilted. All should note some state of completion as well as liability.


And to muddy the water a bit, Franz Merkel, son-in-law of Udo Ansch�tz.

Your tube steel stamp reminds me of either an Austrian or Belgian source with the crown over the imperial eagle. If you have a serial number Gebr�der Merkel may be able to locate the ledger page with info on your sporting weapon.

Thanks for the comments. There is no other G M mark on the lugs or anywhere else, just the bp proof marks. The initials (I assume) LK are on the rifle barrel behind the forearm lug along with a couple of Ms or Ws one horizontal and one vertcal (so to speak).
