Waiting for this Sauer sidelock o/u to arrive. A reasonable assumption is that it is field configuration from barrel length (28") but have not had success finding info or photos which would determine grade (which as I understand from BB relates to engraving pattern). BB says available in 3 grades in trap, skeet, and field models. Any Sauer experts or fanciers with knowledge, photos? Or should I try Abby (Cornell) for a catalog reprint?

Manufactured 1966-75. A member here tells me that first importation to U.S. in 1970. May have something to do with Weatherby as he describes as a Weatherby/Sauer effort. Despite the Sauer connection with Suhl, I can hardly think there could have been US importation at that time period if manufactured in the GDR. I got a 1970 Gun Digest on eBay at the recommendation of the above very helpful gentleman and will perhaps learn more.

Jack, according to an old Gun Traders Guide I have, yours must be a field gun. The skeet gun is listed with 26" barrels and the trap gun with 30". That book has a couple shots of Grade II and Grade III engraving. II is small scroll, a bit less than full coverage. III is much larger scroll, 100% coverage, also looks deeper.

I'm pretty sure those were West German guns.
