I am going to be converting a semi beavertail forend to a splinter. After measureing a Parker, Sauer, And V. Bernardelli, they seem to average around 8" from metal to tip. If anyone has other "flavor" guns, Please measure and give me more parameters so I don't too far one way or the other. Thanks, Mark

Assuming you will be using the original iron, I think you need to be careful about the depth of the latching mechanism on the splinter, versus the deeper beavertail

Thanks Bill, Antone have a Brit gun out to measure? I only have one, an Army & Navy boxlock from around 1890 and it's 7 7/8 inches, tip to metal edge.

1926 20 ga Fox Sterlingworth - 8"
1887-1894 12 ga J&W Tolley - 8 1/2"
1866 16 ga Joseph Lang - 6 9/16"
I'd say make it whatever size pleases you with enough remaining wood to secure the forend iron properly.

Thanks Bill, Antone have a Brit gun out to measure? I only have one, an Army & Navy boxlock from around 1890 and it's 7 7/8 inches, tip to metal edge. I lied! I forgot my single barrel J & W Tolley 12 gauge boxlock. 9 1/4 inches. Two Piepers, one 12 gauge and one 16 gauge, both with Anson push button releases are 7 3/4 inches, not including the pushbutton. A Heym 16 gauge boxlock and Lovena 12 gauge sidelock are 9 inches and 7 1/4 inches respectively. Two Fox A grades are 8 inches and a Sterlingworth 16 gauge snap-on forend is 8 5/8 inches. My personal favorite is the Heym. Just me but I think the more gradual taper looks best.

Thank you all so much. I know what I think looks right but I hadn't seen a formula, as with the cicles to lay out the butt shape. this deffinately helps. Mark

I am confused. You already have a forend that fits, so there is no inletting or fitting to be done. Just go to work on the wood, slowly and carefully. Your eye will tell you when it looks right. Beats the heck out of any finite measurement.

FWIW.... not all beavertail forends are inletted internally to the same degree of neatness as splinter forends. You may find that there will be major gaps under the barrels. The top edges of the beavertail are done to the same standards as the top edges of the splinter. Just my observations of performing the operation you are contemplating MANY times for clients.
