OT cold blue removal

Picked up a 1st gen colt SAA with decent orig finish, but someone splashed cold blue on the back strap, maybe the bbl. Anyway to get the cold blue off, without destroying what is left of the original blue.

Sorry about the colt question, but I trust the collective wisdom of this board.

Some cold blues deposit a very thin copper plate that is turned black by the selenious acid in the blue. You might try a good copper dissolving bore cleaner as it should not hurt the original blue. Please report back if it works as I have never tried it.

[/quote] Others may not agree, but I don't consider a question like this totally off topic if it and the responses may apply to our doubleguns. Please let us know how the solution above works, as we've all seen doubles that got the cold blue treatment.

tried the copper dissolving stuff, but see no affect. I have heard the white vinegar with some alum foil pieces will produce a mix that will take bluing off, but it is non selective.

Most cold blues are not very durable. I think I would carefully try some fine bronze wool and a light oil. Go slow and rub lightly.

try some flitz liquid on cotton patches...soak the patches down good and rub lightly..wipe off with a clean patch...ta da!!

I ended up using white vingear rubbed on with a cloth. This let me control how much blue was removed, and it did work.
