Sometime in the not too distant future, this software (or something like it) will be useful for stock makers. Use the scanner to measure the stock to be duplicated and then load the generated computer file into a cadd controlled milling machine adapted for use on wood. Maybe it's already out there. Wish I had studied Computer Science instead of Biology. I could have fun with this project.

Whose going to make the first one?

This technology is already in use, but not particulary cost effective except in mass manufacture. The tooling and operator costs are too high for one-off use.
Some one still has to hand-sand the stock which requires more than menial skills, even if spray booth finished.

How close would the fit be using this method say for an early L C Smith or other difficult to stock double?

Probably should have added this. Sorry, a senior moment. Take a look at the products and imagine. Costs will come down, as in all new technology.

Thanks for the link Dave, makes a lot more sense now. I'm still sceptical, may gain use in re-creation, but original work will remain just that. With variations in metalwork gun to gun, it may even be of limited use in restocking.

Time will tell, thanks for keeping us up on the technology!

$5000 for the setup and $900 for the cutting? I believe I can get a top notch stocker to restock a sidelock, including finish & checker, for $5900, what am I missing here?

CNC is really the way to go, even if the receiver/metal has a few dimensional chances, the cnc program can be easily modified to accommodate.

I’ve got what I would consider the ultimate stock duplicator. It’s a Bridgeport 3D tracer mill, supposedly accurate to .0005 when properly set up.
Ahhhh … another around to it projects.

I put in 35 years in the machinist trade, much of this as a modelmaker. For a good number of those years I made my living doing "One-Off" jobs on First NC & then CNC equipment of which the general consensus was it was ecconomicaly efficient only for Mass Production. Sure, the parts we made were Expensive, but not near as much so & of far closer tolerances than we had ever produced prior to the changeover. I have put in a lot of hours on conventional Bridgeports, 3D tracer Bridgeports & NC Bridgeports which read a punched tape. I wrote many of my own programs, first on a "Flexi-Writer" which punched a tape simultaneous with printing out a readout. Later I moved up to a more sophisticated machine with a built-in basic computer & which as well as being programed there, could also read in computer generated data from a disc. Many later machines are of course simply run directly from a computer.
In all honesty I do not think I ever saw a Bridgeport which would consistently hold accuracy to ±.0005". To hold this tolerance required very careful manipulation by an experienced machinist, it could not automatically be maintained by an Operator.
As I see it the only holdback to this type of equipment being able to bring back a reasonably priced good quality double is "Lack of Demand". In spite of low bag limits etc, etc, the vast majority of the shooting public still demands "Firepower" & looks askance at any gun which is capable of holding "Only" two shells.
